How to use the Twitter username checker

A Twitter username and an X handle refer to the same unique @name. Start with a recognizable version of your identity, review the format and confirm your choice in X.

  • 1

    Enter your Twitter username

Type your preferred handle without @. Start with your name, brand or product, and keep the 15-character limit in mind.

  • 2

    Check Twitter username availability

Once the format rules pass, select Check X username. Read the result: Looks available, Taken or Couldn't confirm. You cannot switch platforms while a check is running.

  • 3

    Confirm your handle on X

If you need an alternative, add one useful word or underscore. Save the username in X before updating your bio links or announcing the change.

Why a Twitter username can look free but be unavailable

An account can hold a handle without looking active

A suspended or deactivated account may still hold its username. X's help guidance states that these names are not immediately available for reuse. A quiet timeline is also not evidence that the account has been abandoned. Do not plan a launch around a handle you expect to be released. Viewing a profile cannot tell you when, or whether, the username will become available.

Confirm the username in X account settings

A username may also be rejected because it contains restricted terms or does not meet the naming requirements. A third-party checker cannot always distinguish those reasons from an account-related restriction. Read the message X shows for the exact username. If the name remains unavailable, try an alternative. The checker cannot release a username or always explain why it is restricted, and it does not show account details or profile links.

Twitter username taken? Find a clear alternative

Keep the name people recognize and add only what helps distinguish your account. Try these four approaches, then check the complete username against X's 15-character limit.

Add a short word for your field

Add a short word such as Design, Tech or Finance to your name or brand. This works well for an account focused on a clear subject: readers can tell what you post about before opening your profile. Keep the original name easy to recognize and choose a subject you expect to keep covering. Count the whole username, including underscores, and confirm the exact spelling on X.

Twitter username rules: X handle limits

X allows fewer characters and punctuation options than the other platforms. Review the length, permitted characters and availability restrictions before choosing a new username.

  1. 1

Use 5–15 characters for a new username

X's current change-username guidance requires more than four and no more than 15 characters. Count the username itself, without the leading @. A display name has a separate, longer limit.

  2. 2

Stick to A–Z, 0–9 and underscores

An underscore is the only permitted separator. Periods, hyphens, spaces and emojis are not allowed. Compare Maya_Studio (valid format) with Maya.Studio and Maya-Studio (invalid formats).

  3. 3

Avoid reserved names and restricted terms

Ordinary usernames must follow X's restrictions on reserved names and terms, including Admin. Using valid characters alone does not make every name acceptable.

  4. 4

    Usernames must be unique

Choose a username that X will accept for your account. Whether a name meets the format rules and whether it is available are separate questions.
