How to check a YouTube channel name and handle
Your channel name can be shared, but your @handle must be unique. Start with a handle that matches your channel identity, then confirm it in YouTube before publishing your links.
1
Start with your channel identity
Enter a handle based on your channel name, without @. Your display name can keep its spaces; the handle follows its own format rules.
2
Check YouTube handle availability
Once the format rules pass, select Check YouTube handle. Read the result: Looks available, Taken or Couldn't confirm. You cannot switch platforms while a check is running.
3
Confirm the handle in YouTube
If the handle is taken, try a relevant topic or format word. Save the final choice in YouTube before adding it to artwork or video descriptions.
YouTube channel name vs. handle: what should you check?
Keep the channel name separate from the unique handle
Your channel name is the label viewers see with your videos. Your @handle identifies a specific channel in mentions and profile links. This YouTube username checker checks the handle, not ownership of a channel name. If the matching handle is taken, you can keep your channel name and try a close variation. Use familiar words and spelling so viewers can connect the handle to your channel.
Search similar channel names before settling on yours
Search YouTube for the proposed channel name and close spellings, especially among channels covering the same topic. Review the name alongside their content and visual identity: a technically usable name may still make your channel hard to distinguish. This is a separate review from handle availability, and it is not trademark clearance. The checker does not search for similar channels; use YouTube directly before committing to a public identity.
YouTube handle taken? Match it to your channel name
You do not need to abandon a strong channel name because its closest handle is taken. Add a relevant topic, format or audience detail while keeping the connection easy to recognize.
Add a topic that reflects your channel
Pair your channel name with the subject viewers come to watch, such as tech, cooking or explainers. A relevant topic can make the handle recognizable without requiring a change to your public channel name. Choose wording broad enough for future videos. The handle should still fit if you launch a new series within the same subject.
YouTube handle rules for characters and languages
These requirements apply to your @handle, not your channel display name. Length limits vary by writing system, and supported separators must stay inside the handle.
- 1
Check the length for your writing system
Most handles use 3–30 characters. Han or Hangul handles can use 1–10; Ethiopic, Hiragana or Katakana handles can use 2–20. Mixed-script handles may have different limits, so confirm them in YouTube.
- 2
Use supported letters and internal separators
YouTube accepts letters and numbers from supported languages, plus underscores (_), hyphens (-), periods (.) and middle dots (·). Separators cannot be first or last: Maya-Tech follows this rule; -MayaTech does not. Restrictions also apply when combining writing systems.
- 3
Choose a unique handle, regardless of capitalization
A handle must not already be in use. MayaTech and mayatech are treated as the same handle, so changing capital letters will not free it up. Channel display names, by contrast, can be shared.
- 4
Avoid URL-like, phone-like or prohibited handles
A handle cannot resemble a URL or phone number and must follow YouTube's Community Guidelines. Meeting the character rules alone does not guarantee that YouTube will accept it.
